Longevity Research Opens My Eyes

March 6th, 2008 by David Lerner

When will I die? This is the question that has been riding on everyones mind since the beginning of time. According to to the National Center for Health Statistics, the average life expectancy in the US is 78 years old. Now don’t get me wrong, that is a huge improvement from the 1800 - 1900’s when it was much lower, but can’t we do better? The answer is yes, I mean we got this far. Want to know how we did it? The answer is simple, technology and medical advancements.

Thinking About Death

Yes I know, it is a depressingly sad thought. One day, we will all sadly die. Well at least that is what has been imprinted into our minds, but luckily it is something that can be changed. Stem cell research and nanotechnology have already been developed, and with some time and genus, we could easily solve this fatal problem.

I’ll admit it, even I have thought of that one day when my heart will stop beating. I’m sure everyone has, especially adults in their 30’s, 40’s, 60’s… You know who you are, don’t you want to make a difference? Good, you should!

Anti-Longevity

Confusingly enough, there are many opposed to this issue. Although I don’t necessarily feel like listing all of the reasons, I’ll jot down a few.

1. Highly religious people believe that death is what carries them to their maker.

2. They don’t like their lives and would rather die than spend some time and fix them.

3. Social or population issues - this is something that can easily be addressed in a variety of ways. My thought? Expand our horizons to other planets; something I believe we will start to do in the next 20-30 years. This is quite a stretch, but it is possible, if adaptive technology is created that is able to withstand massive amounts of heat, or lack thereof.

This is a very dear issue to me and all of us here at TalkPrice. Although we are only teenagers, it is good to think about our futures, something we will eventually face.
