Why do people buy domains?

There are many reasons why people buy domain names. It is however for the most part split into two sections, and both of them can make you money (if that is what you’re looking for). The first is for personal or company use on a website, while the second is for domain resell or parking.
Website
Now there are plenty of ways to make money off of a website. You can create a one of a kind site that draws people and therefore by putting ads on it you can make large profits. The other option is to develop a site (ads or not) that becomes extremely popular and then sell it as a package of the content, the domain, and the network of users.
You can also just use it as a personal way to express yourself or your interests if it isn’t profit that your looking for, but just a way to spend your extra time.
Domain Resell and/or Parking
In my last post I covered parking and what it is. But to briefly sum it up, it is basically taking your unused domain, and covering it up with ads. This is done automatically for you by any company of your choosing, and then by the end of the month you either get a fat check, a small one, or none at all.
Domain Resell is something that is hard to make money from these days unless you are freakishly lucky or amazingly smart. To describe it in its simplest form, it is for the most part the buying of a really good domain name that others would want, and then selling it to the highest bidder. A good example of this could be something like MacForums.com because if someone were selling that, I’ll admit that even I would be a little bit interested. You want to find something that is easy to remember, consists of 1-2 words, and is preferably a .COM name (if you want the cash to come rolling in). That is however not necassary if you have a premium domain (one commonly used word followed by an extension of anything such as business.net and laptops.org).
Now as I earlier stated it is hard to do this. The internet has been out for so long that most of the lucrative domain names are gone. The reason why I said it takes extreme luck or brilliance is because that is what it takes to find one that hasn’t been found already. It’s like finding a new goldmine, its hard/impossible to do but very rewarding.
Soon, I’ll uncover a secret that many people don’t know. Well its not that much of a secret, but for those of you who are not aware of it, it is a great way to get some of those premium and valuable domains without paying their asking price.
